Approach Dating Like It’s a Game of Poker

You know the old story. Boy meets girl. You share a drink, a dinner, a night out on the town, and eventually it turns into something more — an actual relationship. Many jobs have special aspects that can put unique pressures on those in their lives. In the grand scheme of things, dating a poker player is probably less stressful than dating, say, a police officer or a military fighter pilot. Still, if you want to make the most of this relationship, there are some things you should know about the poker lifestyle in general that may help you better understand your poker playing beau, and help you on your road to happily ever after. Much like a small business owner at the mercy of local road construction, or a day trader when the market suddenly dips, even a very skilled poker play can lose money in the short term on a few unlucky breaks. Some players like to vent; others will bottle it all up and deny there is anything wrong. Probably the most effective way to cope with the emotional swings, whether they are frequent or rare, is to ask how he likes to deal with tilt BEFORE it occurs.

Dating someone is tricky business. It is a bit like playing poker, we do not want to reveal our cards too quickly, yet if we hold onto them for too long the correct moment can pass and the game might be lost. In both dating and poker there is always a risk factor involved. If you never sit down to play a game of poker it is absolutely guaranteed that you will never lose a game of poker, however, it also means you will never win a game of poker.

Similarly if you never allow yourself to enter into a relationship with another person it is absolutely guaranteed that you will never be hurt by the other person, but of course it is also guaranteed you will never share in the joys of a relationship. While there is always the risk of getting hurt in a relationship it is possible to live out a relationship in a way that both minimises the risk of hurt and increases the likelihood of discerning whether or not it is a relationship that might be a keeper.

Everything really comes down to prudence, which in modern times has sadly been reduced to being overly cautious. However, prudence is the pivotal virtue which gives us the ability to know what actions are appropriate for us in a particular time and place. So here is my list of three ways to practice prudence in a relationship. The points are simple in theory but not always so in reality.

Just as one needs to practice strategy and skills to win at poker, one needs to practice strategy and skills to win at dating.

However, sadly it seems as if we have missed the boat entirely, when it comes to understanding the opposite sex. When will we ever learn? How many times do you have to fall over the bridge, knock your head on the concrete, before you finally understand our differences?

Not bad for a guy who only started playing two years ago. Poker is a fascinating game. But those who delve deeper into the game know that every hand tells a story, a mystery rich in strategic depth and beauty. I once played an online session that lasted 17 hours straight. I love the challenge. I love the psychological warfare.

Dating is Like Playing Poker: In Relationships, Know When to Hold Them & When to Fold Them

By Paul Samra. In my book, I use poker as a metaphor for dating to help singles make better choices in dating. In dating, as in poker, you have to know when to hold them and when to fold them.

Dating sucks. Poker sucks. Dating rocks. Poker rocks. It depends on your perspective to figure out where your really stand. If you’ve been taking a beating in.

As the World Series of Poker WSOP closes for another year, and millions of dollars are fed to men who have spent a fortnight of their lives playing cards, we were left with another final table about as diverse as a Father John Misty concert. And yet again, there was one demographic missing from the final table of the biggest poker tournament in the world: women. French player Gaelle Baumann came close in , but finished in 10th place, narrowly missing a shot at glory.

Thing is, it’s a sport, if you can call it that, that really shouldn’t be dominated by one gender — it’s just a bunch of people, seated, being strategic with cards. Kara Scott is a poker player, but primarily a broadcaster who hosts interviews with the winners and losers at the WSOP. I spoke to her to try to figure out why this card game doesn’t seem to attract as many women as men, and what can be done to encourage greater inclusivity. VICE: One thing that puts me off the game is when you go to the casinos there’ll be guys who try to bully other guys at the table, and kind of act like they’re the big dogs, and it’ll piss you off and make you want to leave.

Do you see that as a problem? Kara Scott: People definitely have different styles, and you can’t police their styles, and I know that, but I find it off-putting sometimes when I’m playing against players who use a lot of body language or verbal cues to show you they don’t think much of you. And I think that makes them not just bad for poker, but not great for them either. If they’re sitting at those games and they’re making money but they’re chasing away the players who are coming to have fun — who they’re taking the money from — then they’re actually doing themselves a disservice as well as, you know, not being very nice about it.

Poker does not need to chase away new players, or players who are recreational. I have been an advocate for recreational players for a really long time, because I don’t play professionally. I play with the professionals but I make my living as a broadcaster, and I’m very clear about the difference.
